The African Women Innovation Hackathon aims to draw global attention to the work African women develop and grow the tech talent pipeline in the African region.
Participants will be able to develop and submit their idea, prototype, or product targeting solving problems around the central theme of the hackathon after undergoing a pre hackathon training.

Where the Global Series is Headed
This year, the series goals around opportunity are rising even further through the Global Virtual Hackathon. Alongside our worldwide in-person hackathon events, the community will also launch an online program that allows anyone in the world to meet and compete – regardless of barriers or borders. This event will take place throughout June of 2019 and will include sponsor challenges and prizes, accelerator opportunities, workshops and educational webinars. Official registration is now open for the Global Virtual Hackathon, so join the community to begin brainstorming today.

In-Person Global Hackathon Series
Who Can Participate?
One principle that has guided this community since its first Hackathon is that everyone is welcome. Great ideas stem from discussion, and we believe the best discussions start by talking to someone whose background or experiences might differ from your own. With this in mind, we invite all startups, developers, entrepreneurs, and designers who are passionate about creating to join regardless of experience level, geographic location, or similar factors.
What the Challenges & Prizes Will Look Like
Challenges and prizes will be presented by a few of our amazing friends and sponsors, but there will also be an open-challenge for those just looking for the space to create.
2019 AngelHack Challenge: Challenge yourself and your entrepreneurial spirit. Make something innovative without limits, something that brings positive change to the world, even something that solves a small problem. It’s that simple.
2019 AngelHack Prize: The winning team from each hackathon will receive $500 and an invite into AngelHack’s HACKcelerator program (detailed below).
2019 Sponsor Challenges and Prizes will be announced soon, but in the meantime, check out these previous Global Series challenges and prizes to inspire new ideas and motivate your project this year:
- IBM’s Call for Code Challenge: Improve logistics based on traffic and weather activity. Create an application that helps build resilient communities, and safeguards the health and well-being of individuals and institutions.
- Big Data Challenge: Data is expanding exponentially. How can we glean insights from big data to improve our world?
- Veridium Prize: $2500 in Cash (USD) and $2500 worth of VERDE cryptocurrency
- Agora.io Prize: $1000 in cash prize, plus a chance to win the “Agora.io Developer of the Year” award and a paid trip to Beijing in Sep 2018!
HACKcelerator Prize
The grand prize winning project from each hackathon will also receive an exclusive invite into AngelHack’s 12-week remote program, the HACKcelerator. Here, teams receive mentorship, the chance to meet and work with some of the top names in technology, and the ability to pitch to a sea of investors during a Virtual Demo Day at the end of the program. To encourage social impact projects, the HACKcelerator will also be accepting Code For A Cause Impact Award projects to support social good technology in local communities, globally.
The 7 Hackathon Guidelines
We know some rules are meant to be broken, but you should probably (read: definitely) stick by these:
- Fresh Code – We all start coding at the same time. It’s cool to work on designs beforehand, digital mockups, open source frameworks, and anything else available to everyone, but keep things within fair limits.
- Code Review – Winning teams may be subject to a code-review at some point following the event or immediately before winning. This is to ensure that all code used is in fact fresh.
- Ownership and IP – You own your IP and whatever you create. Simple as that.
- Team Size – No more than five people.
- Submissions – Each hackathon has its individual hackathon.io page where projects need to be submitted by the designated time. You’ll receive an email with instructions on how to do just that.
- Demos – You’ll have 2 minutes to demo the functionality of your project and talk through your idea, and 1 minute for Q&A from judges.
