Hackathon Tip:
The best way to win any competition is to create a perfect match with your team, but also enjoy it… Have a good time hacking towards a clear goal. When you have a planned path to follow it is the ideal way to achieve awards.
Hackathon Chops:
I’ve won 3 hackathons. My first hackathon was AngelHack 2016.
Fun Fact:
I’m crazy about order, I love to plan every detail, this was a big challenge at first, but now is my most powerful tool.
Hackathon Tip:
Include breaks in the planning! We are humans after all and after a certain point working non-stop, it gets hard to stay focused and tired people tend to make more mistakes.
Fun Fact:
My friends say I’m a bug hunter (software bugs) because I always find the weirdest bugs in the weirdest places. For example, anything from getting an error stating that “something happened” to receiving empty SMS in a two step authentication.
Hackathon Tip:
It is useful to make a list of all the things you need to do and what everyone knows, so if you forget something, another member of your team will remember. Trust your team!
Fun Fact:
I lack the sense of orientation. Finding addresses is pretty difficult for me. One time, I was looking for a place and I thought I was lost, so I knocked on a door to ask, and to my surprise it was the place I was looking for… This kind of stuff happens to me a lot.
Hackathon Tip:
Don’t forget to enjoy it. Even if it is a competition and you feel pressure, never get stressed and never give up. There will be some moments where you just want to quit, but the most important thing is to try, even if you don’t know how to solve it.
Hackathon Story:
In my first hackathon, Hackatravel in 2017, I remember I thought I knew enough to solve any situation, but in fact, I didn’t. I was desperate due to the fact I had to develop an application in Android, and I didn’t have any idea how to. I remember the rest of the teams were working hard using tools that they knew. So, we decided to implement our solution our way, the result was that we learned new things and we got third place. It wasn’t that bad after all. Hackathons I’ve participated in include:
- Hackatrave 2017 (3rd Place)
- Angelhack 2018
- The Only Key 2018 (2nd Place)
- Hackatravel V2 2018 (1st Place)
- Hacer Visible lo invisible 2018 (2nd Place)
Fun fact:
I usually look serious, however, once you get to know me better, you would notice that I am not. Metalhead, cat lover, tech geek.
Eugene Musebe
Building and empowering the African tech ecosystem through hackathons has always been my dream. Being an AngelHack ambassador has not only exposed me to the African tech ecosystem but to a global network of passionate individuals who aim to change the world through technology.
Eugene was a master Ambassador at 2018’s Nairobi Tech Week, helping over 160 participants build 38 prototypes solving problems in Kenya. He is currently EIT at MEST Africa in addition to all his grassroots work organizing tech opportunities via HackIt Africa.
