Databricks partnered with us to host the Generative AI World Cup, a global competition bringing together over 1,500 developers and data professionals from 18 countries. The goal? To showcase cutting-edge generative AI solutions leveraging Databricks’ Mosaic AI technologies while fostering innovation and collaboration across industries.

Despite their strong technology stack and appeal, Databricks faced two critical tasks:

  • Ensuring participants were verified developers or data professionals to maintain a high caliber of submissions.
  • Effectively marketing the competition to reach their global target audience of AI engineers and data scientists.

Hosting a Hackathon for Data Professionals

Hackathons are typically open to anyone, but for the Generative AI World Cup, Databricks needed a more curated approach to ensure the competition achieved its goals. The challenge was twofold: to market the event globally to attract a skilled audience of data professionals and to verify that participants had the required expertise in AI and data fields. By addressing these unique requirements, we ensured that the hackathon maintained a high standard of participation while achieving global reach.

We collaborated with Databricks to design and implement solutions that addressed these challenges head-on.

  • Selective Vetting Process: Ensured only developers with data expertise were accepted, creating a competition populated by highly skilled professionals.
  • Global Marketing Strategy: Implemented a targeted marketing campaign to attract developers worldwide. By combining StackUp’s established network with digital outreach, social media promotions, and tailored email campaigns, the competition reached a diverse and skilled audience.
  • StackUp Hackathon Platform: Leveraged StackUp’s extensive network of over 200,000 developers, making it easy for participants to join. Integration with StackUp’s platform streamlined registration, team coordination, and project submissions, ensuring effortless global participation.
